Don't

I'm literally sitting in my gym...sitting in the cafe waiting for dinner. Just finished my pilates reformer class (my 6th class people!!!!!). And I'm thinking. I'm thinking about giving up.

Ha. Got cha. I know what you're all thinking. Now stop that.

I'm thinking about giving up...and how much I never will. See? I'm linking my new found pilates reformer inspiration to my burgeoning writing career (alright, not career...dream) and I'm thinking that I'm not giving up. Now, if you've followed my blog for a while you've heard this from me before. But now, today, right this very minute it seems so big to me. So real. So not-give-uppy.

I wish I could search the web for some inspiration quote or some inspirational photo but the browser here doesn't have tabs. I know, right?

Hopefully you will simply be inspired somehow...some way...to not give up.

Desiderata

A woman I used to teach with emailed this to me back on October 17, 2008, to pick me up from my then query-woes. I have been saving it in my home inbox ever since, unsure as to when I should post it.

Today is rather ordinary. No news of any kind for me. Sort of a limbo-kind-of-day. But for some reason I felt compelled to share it...today. Maybe one of you lovely readers may get a bit of something good from it. Maybe someone new will stumble upon my blog because of it. Maybe.

DESIDERATA
By: Max Ehrmann, a poet and lawyer from Terre Haute, Indiana,
who lived from 1872 to 1945

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I Threw My Hat in the Ring

I entered a query contest - click HERE to check it out - I'm entry #12.

I'd honestly love to hear your 2 cents. Feel free to leave your comments/advice/critique on that blog!!

*FYI, I re-wrote and revised this query after reading Elana Johnson's BRILLIANT ebook, From the Query to the Call.

Does Anyone Else Do This?

I got my WIP up to page 75 this weekend. I'm loving my main character and find deep comfort in repeatedly scouring over my original four pages of typed notes and scene ideas.

But here's the weird part. Sunday morning I scrolled back to page one and started reading - why I do not know - and then I started revising. A lot. And then panicking. A lot. And doubting my writing ability. A lot. And like a good bully, kicking myself when down by repeatedly (and tortuously) reiterating to myself that I am currently un-agented. A lot.

Why do I do this to myself? I am presently angry with my "weekend self" and plan on sending "weekend self" to my room. Bad "weekend self," bad.

Does anyone else do this wicked-type thinking? How do you tell that voice to shove it?

Spring-Fresh CONTEST

My Spring-Fresh Contest

In a bold effort to build up my followers to 50+ (I said bold), I’ve cooked up quite a fun contest. Well, I think its fun – let’s hope you readers out there agree.

Let’s discuss the prize, because, isn’t that what really matters?!? Since this is a blog about writing and most of my followers are indeed writers, both accomplished and aspiring, I thought a “writer’s basket of goodness” would be the perfect prize. However, know this, for any non-writer-followers, it is perfectly acceptable to re-name this basket simply, "basket of goodness," it's full of good things. What, pray tell, is a Writer’s Basket of Goodness? I’m glad you asked.

Zee Prize
Writer’s Basket of Goodness Includes:
  • Hardback copy of If I Stay by Gayle Forman
  • Oversized Paperback copy of Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock
  • Gourmet chocolate bar for those moments when only chocolate will do
  • Two new gel pens to write, write, write. Or doodle.
  • Package of Sharpie highlighters to assist you during your editing/revising
  • New writing tablet to sketch out new scenes or develop new characters
  • Pack of “Hold That Thought” mini post-it arrows to mark places in need of revision
  • Mini memo pad & pen to capture your new ideas on the go
  • Package of sticky notes to remind yourself how talented you are
  • Hand painted mug for your coffee or tea to get your creative juices flowing
  • Package of Jelly Belly, Coldstone Creamery flavored jelly beans for when you just need a little something sweet
  • Package of dark chocolate Hershey Kisses for when you’d like that chocolate kick
  • All packaged up in a basket just for you
Zee Points
How it all works:
Tally up your initial points in your first comment below.
Each point = one official entry into the virtual pot over on random.org
Your points will hopefully grow with each new follower attributed to YOU.
Check out my logic…
  • 5 points for being a current blog follower
  • 3 points for becoming a NEW blog follower
  • 1 point for posting a contest description and link back here on your blog
  • 1 point for posting a contest description and link back here on your facebook page
  • 1 point for posting a link back here on your Twitter page
  • 1 point for already following me on Twitter
  • 2 points for becoming a NEW follower on Twitter
  • Here’s the BEST way to rack up a whole mess of points: 5 points for every single new follower I get on my blog because of YOU and your brilliant word of mouth skills. That’s right 5 points every time!!! How will I know what new member(s) are attributed to you? Well, I suggest you tell people they MUST let me know they are a new blog follower because of YOU in a comment to this very post. That way, you’ll be sure to get your rightful points!
  • 1 BONUS point to everyone who entered if I surpass 50 followers before the contest ends!
Zee Rules
  • Contest officially starts on Thursday, April 1, 2010 and will run through Friday, April 30, 2010 5:00 p.m. EST.
  • Please email me so I have a record of your email address: kmwalton1(at)verizon(dot)net NO, I will not email you at all, I promise, unless you win. That is how you will be entered into Random.org, and no, everything over there is strictly private. They know how to help a gal pull a truly random winner, that’s for sure.
  • I will enter you into the contest according to how many points you’ve accrued. For example: 12 points = 12 official entries, 25 points = 25 official entries, etc… The more points, the higher your chance of winning!
  • I will keep a tally of your points, and will post them on my blog as close to the end of the contest as I can…so you can verify.
  • Winner will be chosen by Random.org
  • Winner will be announced on Saturday, May 1, 2010

I thank you for participating and having fun with this. Go forth and amass points!
Good luck to all!!
